LINE DANCE CALGARY

SUMMER & FALL 2009

"Every day brings a chance for you to draw in a breath,

kick off your shoes, and dance."

Oprah Winfrey

Life has been busy, busy, busy!  June was a month of graduations with Tajali graduating from Grade 12 and Adam earning his B.A. in Psychology, with distinction.  Tajali will be entering college in the fall and working on a psychology degree and Adam is making preparations to travel to New Zealand for several months before coming back and working on his MasterÕs degree.  My husband is going with Adam and heÕll stay for three weeks traveling with Adam and helping Adam get settled. They leave July 2nd so getting them organized is on the current agenda.  Then Tajali and I leave July 8th for the Portland dance event followed by several days in Seaside, Oregon.

I will not be running summer classes this year but will instead do a couple of workshops to gear up for the New Jersey event in September.  Once I have those dates confirmed IÕll let everyone know.  There will be likely be one in July and two in August. Dances for summer workshops will include Roomba, Jesse James, and new dances creeping up on the charts.

SPRING SESSION

Spring classes flew by with everyone learning so many new dances.  There are some brilliant dances in the works at the moment and I think the advanced dancers all agree that Coochie Bang Bang is one of the hardest dances weÕve done as well as one of the best!  Lots of other dances for the intermediate/advanced level included Addicted, Miss California, In Control, Insomnia, Notice The Danger, Moonlight Kiss, Beulah, Fire On Ice, Spotlight, Forgive Me, Whiter Than White, Poetry In Motion, Poker Face as well as many others.

Classes for beginners and improvers were a lot of fun and it was good to see the improvers moving up to tackle more difficult and challenging dances for them.  Simplemente, TGIF, Turn Me Loose, 123 Summertime, Baby Believe, and more became a part of their repertoire and I enjoyed watching these dancers become more confident with the steps each week.

UPCOMING DANCE EVENTS

There are several dance events coming up for the remainder of 2009 that people can take part in. For those of us who normally attend Harvest Moon in Kelowna, we were saddened to hear that it has been postponed this year.  Always a fun event, Tom Selzler has decided to use the rest of this year to get his health back in order after battling cancer and he has the opportunity to do some traveling to Europe so heÕs taking advantage of this opportunity.  He is looking at running an event in 2010 in Kelowna and I will keep people posted on that as I hear from Tom.

Portland Dance Festival, July 9-12

http://www.portlanddancefestival.com

This event is geared to couples and line dancers with Michele Perron, Michael Barr, Michele Burton & Jo Miller instructing line dance workshops over the weekend.  Friends from California will be there as well as friends from B.C. so IÕm looking forward to attending this one.

WOW Line Dance Spectacular, Sept. 3-6

Newark, New Jersey

http://www.wowlinedance.com

An incredible line up of choreographers will be at this event including Scott Blevins, Rachael McEnaney, John Robinson, Max Perry, Kathy Hunyadi, Kate Sala, Roy Verdonk and many others.  Several from Calgary will be going to this one and flying in a couple of days early to tour and shop in New York.

Vegas Dance Explosion, November 18-22

http://djdancing.com/vegasexplosion.html

Several from Alberta attend this well run event filled with five days of workshops and fun filled social dance evenings.  This event brings in choreographers and instructors from all over the world and several dancers from Calgary and area have already booked for this one.

FALL SCHEDULE

The tentative schedule for fall classes is below.  If there are any changes to this schedule, it will be updated and posted by mid August. Registration is now ongoing for Monday night, Wednesday night, Thursday night and Saturday classes.  These classes must be pre-registered and registrations are due by the September 7th. There are several changes for fall, including changes to times and location, so please take note before sending in your registrations. Some highlights for fallÉÉ.

Mondays at Varsity will see the addition of a new class geared to youth.  I am really excited to see Tajali teaching a class for youth age 10-12.  She will be teaching that class from 5:30-6:25 on Monday evenings.  Adult classes for beginner level and intermediate level will continue at Varsity on Monday evenings but the advanced class will not run at this location.

Classes for Heritage Seniors will commence again in September on Tuesdays and registration for those classes will take place on the first day of class at the church on September 15th.  You will also need to purchase a membership to the Heritage Seniors which can be purchased the same day.

Classes for new beginners and improvers will start up again at Mid-Sun Community Centre and classes need to be registered directly through them.  Details can be found on the schedule below.

Advanced classes with Confederation Park Seniors also need to be registered directly through their offices and details can be found below.

A new class for brand new beginners will start in September at the Acadia Rec Complex. Intermediate and advanced levels that used to run at Acadia however will now be run in the upper hall of St. AndrewÕs Presbyterian Church on Heritage Drive S.W. for the fall. Classes at that location for the advanced dancers only will be extended to an hour and a half.

There will be the addition of a new class on Saturday mornings also in the upper hall of the church.  This will be workshop style classes geared for high intermediate and advanced level dancers who want dance event prep since so many attend out of town dance events.

STAMPEDE 2009 Ð JULY 3-12, 2009

Stampede seems to have cropped up all of a sudden and we spent a couple of Saturday mornings running through about 40 dances that we tend to dance over Stampede.  Many events that ran last year are not running this year due to economic restraints.  We had several problems last year with the Stampede Caravan Committee who were not receptive to our dancing at the breakfasts and I made a decision not to take part in any Caravan events this year. Because I am also in Portland this year during Stampede, I will not be taking part in many events.  I will however be sending out a list of places that one of the dancers has coordinated and these are ones that there are usually a good number of dancers at.

DANCE WEAR RECOMMENDATIONS

People have asked where to purchase dance shoes.  In the past I have worn Angelo Luzio shoes but over the past year I found that the style and feel had changed due to a different manufacturer.  I recently went to Masque on Macleod Trail. They stock a wide variety of dance shoes and suggested So Danca which is similar to Angelo Luzio but with a slightly higher heel and a little more feminine looking. Click here to see it.

It fits slightly snugger than the Angelo Luzio and is very comfortable.  Linda is one of the owners and she is happy to bring in sizes to fit so take a look.  I think youÕll be impressed.  TheyÕre located at #5-9250 Macleod Trail S.E. They also stock Angelo Luzio and the Bloch dance shoes for those who like the dance sneaker. Their prices are comparable with other dance shoe stores in Calgary.
