DANCE CALGARY
APRIL Š JUNE, 2010
AhhhhhhÉÉÉspring!
The word just makes me feel more alive! ThereÕs a new freshness and
awareness of people, things, and the desire to do and accomplish. Winter wears me down and I go through
the winter months with a feeling of wanting to push myself, but knowing IÕd
rather curl up and hibernate.
Spring arrives and I canÕt wait to get moving.
Going to the Palm Springs event in January helped. It was so wonderful to see friends
Terri, Kim, Nell, Cindy, Diana, Fannie, Ruben and others and to make so many
more new friends. They always put
a smile on my face. A small event
but a cozy one ensured that people got to chat, mingle and socialize as well as
dance. Going from cold temps in
Calgary to the warmth of Palm Springs was an added bonus.
In February, we were able to chase away the winter blues
by having Joanne Brady come to Calgary for Footloose in the Foothills, a
Calgary first. Over 100
linedancers from this area attended and we had a great time with Joanne and
local instructors teaching a mix of old and new dances.
We now have the Calgary Dance Stampede coming up in April,
a UCWDC event for both couples and line dancers. After a long hiatus where line dancing was not featured at
this event, the new event directors decided to bring it back and Guyton Mundy
and Michele Perron will be here with us mid April.
Spring is also the time when I take a bit of a break to
plan my schedule for the remainder of the year and make some time to do the fun
stuff like taxes, spring cleaning, calling renovators to book house siding, new
driveway, new furnace, fence and deck builders! My splurge is going to be a hot tub once the deck is
done. That might make me stay home
a little moreJ
The rest of the year is a busy one with more classes being
added on throughout the city in the fall.
I thank God that my health has improved so much that IÕve been able to
add on more. When youÕve had a bad
year of health, you appreciate it so much more when youÕre better and you donÕt
take it for granted. Last year
around this time, I was at LAPD and wore a back brace and the only dancing I
did was from a chair tapping my feet!
I was on opiate painkillers and my life involved weekly physio, massage
and chiropractic care.
MaybeÉprobably because of thatÉ.I feel like IÕm making up
for lost time. IÕm now going to JG
Marathon in North Carolina end of May (click here) PikeÕs Peak
in Colorado in July. IÕm
still contemplating JohnÕs JJ Jam Classic in June as well. September IÕll be in
British Columbia again for Deb SelzlerÕs Harvest Moon event. IÕm looking at Windy City in October,
will be back in Vegas in November and have already booked my pass for Worlds in
Nashville. IÕll be doing some
workshop classes in August as well as taking some courses myself to do some
personal upgrading. All in all I
think the remainder of the year is going to fly by.
PLEASE NOTE THAT TOMÕS BOOTY SHAKERS EVENT IN JULY HAS
BEEN CANCELLED FOR THIS YEAR.
For those of you like me who plan WELL in advanceÉ..a
heads up on a couple of cruises.
Gerard Murphy from the Maritimes has his DancinÕ on the Water Western
Caribbean cruise set for April 9-15, 2011. You can check out details on Facebook (search for DancinÕ On
the Water). This cruise fills
quickly and his last one had over 130 people! I REALLY wanted to go on this one but my husband, who is a
teacher, is in the midst of exam week and I didnÕt want to cruise and leave him
behind!
Good friend Terri Slemmons is also organizing an Alaskan cruise in July or
August of 2011. Stewart and I will
be doing on that one and we have the added bonus of Simon Ward tentatively
instructing. Terri is just getting
finalizing things with Simon and once I have more details from her, IÕll pass
information on. In the meantime,
for those who like to cruise, you have a lot of time to start saving for one or
both of theseJ
CLASSES
What can I say?
All is good! I have been so
pleased with the beginners IÕve had.
Most of the dancers at that level have been
with me since September and moved up to an Improver level
over winter. For them, the hardest
part was remembering the names of the dances! They all had their own names for them, ie. AmyÕs ŅDonÕt Cha
WishÓ is the Naughty Dance!
MicheleÕs ŅPure MoviesÓ is known as ŅM.J.Ó since itÕs done to a Michael
Jackson song. IÕve been trying to
emphasize the name of the dance several times in class so they start to
remember. Dances that the
beginners and improvers have been doing are easy ones, but done to a variety of
music so they donÕt get used to one song..
Intermediate level classes were mixed with a variety of
dances both new and old, reviewing dances from the past and reinforcing whatÕs
been learned. IÕve seen that level
step it up to where they are feeling more confident and not having to do as
much walkthrough before it can be danced.
The advanced dancers are all learning new ones but it gets
harder to keep them sorted out in our heads! There are just so many dances and we can only get through so
many in a 1.5 hour class. ItÕs
hard to find the balance between teaching new ones or reviewing to keep the
ones we know fresh.
For a list of dances that have been taught recently, check
out the dances and music link
YouÕll find the spring schedule below. Take a close look as some of the dates
have been changed because IÕm out of Calgary and had to make some revisions.
Lastly, a HUGE thank you to all my Facebook friends! You all impact my life so much. I go to so many events because of you
and because of the friendships that have been formed. I donÕt get to see many of you often enough but am so glad
that Facebook is a way to stay connected to this great line dance community!

important ingredient in this recipe of lifeÓ
