Hi everyone! A short newsletter just to update on
what our summer was like, what weÕve been dancing, where weÕre going and where
new classes will be.
After a busy Stampede where
we danced at several breakfasts and events over the 10 days, it was time to
step it into gear and get ready for the Harvest Moon Line Dance event being
held September 19-21st in Westbank. With a playlist of over 100 dances over the weekend, we
started learning several new ones and reviewing ones we havenÕt done in a
while. I can only tell you that
weÕre going to be on the dance floor all night long! The problem will be not mixing up dances, as our brains are
full of so manyJ
In the middle of August,
my husband and I took our first vacation in 18 years WITHOUT kids! What a strange feeling to go off
without them and to leave them at home together to look after the house and
animals. Off we flew to Portland,
picked up our rental and spent the next nine days driving the Oregon
coast. I just missed being near
the ocean so much that it was the only place I wanted to go. Seaside is a fun beach town and we
loved it there. Our other favorite
spot was Bandon, which was just an exquisite place with a gorgeous stretch of
beach. We walked a lot on this
trip and went through some of the lighthouses, explored all the funky little
quaint shops and book stores in the towns and avoided the big store malls. It was a great trip and I didnÕt dance
for nine days!
Now itÕs back to Harvest
Moon prep with just a few weeks to go and then fall classes will start in
earnest.
Coming up very soon is the
dance marathon fundraiser that we are holding for Tom & Deb Selzler. As many know, Tom was diagnosed with
esophageal cancer in April. His
esophagus was removed and he has been undergoing both chemo and radiation and
it has been a very difficult time for this family. Tom is only 45 and they have a 9-year-old son, Bryce.
Ranchman's on
Macleod is donating their space on
Saturday, September 6th from 11:00Ð 5:00 for the marathon. Registration is $25.00 a person. Spectators can
come and watch for $10.00. The dance marathon takes
place Saturday, September 6th at Ranchmans from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. This is a mixed dance event open to
both the line dance community and couples dancers. Please consider supporting this event and helping this
family. I have also set up a trust account at TD
Canada Trust and if you are not able to take part on Sept. 6th, please consider
either sponsoring someone in this marathon, or people can make a donation at
any TD Canada Trust into trust account 0169-6371136. TD Canada Trust will be issuing a bank draft payable to Tom
& Deb for the full amount of proceeds raised from this event and it will be
presented to them from the Calgary dance community at the Harvest Moon Line
Dance Festival later that month.
Our line dance community has supported many charities over the years
through dancing at various fundraisers and holding our own dances, but this is
the first time weÕve raised funds for a fellow dancer so if youÕre a Calgary
dancer, please email me for a registration at suehall@telusplanet.net and come and
spend Sat. Sept. 6th dancing in a community minded fun event. Thanks to those of you who have already registered. This event can
only happen if we make it happen so let's get the Calgary dance community
involved and see how big we can make this.
YouÕll find the new
updated schedule below and hopefully there is a class that fits your needs. IÕm
really thrilled to announce that a class for new beginners will be starting at
the Mid-Sun community centre and I expect that as those classes progress,
intermediate levels will eventually be added on there. Note that all classes
EXCEPT Heritage Seniors and Confederation Park need to be pre-registered so
contact me if you require a registration form.
Unfortunately, I have had
rate increases at the community centres I teach at, as well as increases in
liability insurance and I have had to reflect that change in fees. Note new fee structures as well.
Hope youÕve all had a good
summer and are ready to get back to dancing. I look forward to working with new beginners; getting the
beginners moved up to a bit more challenge; and keeping the
intermediate/advanced dancers going with new and challenging dances! IÕve also
posted a list of dances weÕve been busy learning/reviewing or on our Òto doÓ
list. You can see weÕve been busyJ See you on the dance floor!
