LINE  DANCE CALGARY

DECEMBER 2009

ÒGod gives us the steps; itÕs up to us to do the danceÓ

Classes for me are over for the year while my family and I get started with our Teen Angels charity. December is spent working with a number of junior and senior high schools and community organizations that work with homeless teens. We ensure that disadvantaged teens in Calgary receive Christmas gifts.  Some of their stories are sad and many of these young teens have little or no family support, are working two or three jobs and trying to stay in school.  So many of my dancers have donated items for these kids and IÕm grateful to all of you who support this charity. These kids are always blown away with the fact that total strangers would give them Christmas gifts and for many, it could make a difference in the direction theyÕre headed.  Thank you all for making it possible to do this. ItÕs always the highlight of our Christmas as well as an eye opener seeing the difficulties that some of our youth face on a daily basis.

VEGAS DANCE EXPLOSION:
What a time we had in Vegas Nov. 18-22nd!  Over 600 people attended the Vegas Dance Explosion and five days of workshops and evenings filled with dancing kept dancers busy.  It was great to see many go from Calgary, High River & Okotoks and wonderful to catch up with friends that we hadnÕt seen for awhile. There were so many great workshops and I learned enough dances to teach over the winter session for all levelsÉ..thatÕs an added bonus! My personal favorite dances were Swim Away (Will Craig), Medina and Pii Pii (both by Niels Poulsen), Shoes Of Another Man (Jo Thompson Szymanski) Abidi-Hi-Bidi-Hop-Hop, Broken Heels and Hell If I (all by Jo & John Kinser).

You can read some of the reports of this event and take a look at photos at Vivienne ScottÕs website at http://stayinline.homestead.com/REPORTVegas09.html.

Also, head to http://linedancefun.com where you can check out a report by Doris Volz.

Some photos are also linked here.  A huge thank you to Carolyn Kimura from Hawaii who took these wonderful pictures and gave permission to put them on my website.  This woman is a marvel with a camera!

My daughter, Tajali, entered her first choreography competition with her intermediate/advanced dance ÒSunglassesÓ.  Judges were Guyton Mundy, Niels Poulsen, Michael Barr, Vivienne Scott & Amy Christian-Sohn.  TajaliÕs dance won first place, earning her a teaching slot at next yearÕs event.  It was such an overwhelming success for someone of her young age and I see some great things in her future.  A huge thank you to friends Susan Clark, Debbie Mills, Jo Miller, Brenda Jones and others who took part in learning her dance with the judges and giving her such strong support and encouragement and a big thank you to Ruben Luna who spent a lot of time throughout the event giving Tajali support, encouragement and much wisdomJ Thank you to Cindy Aldrich and Diana Byers for videotaping and being there for such great support!  Tajali has been inundated with e-mails from people who are teaching her dance, including John Robinson who will be teaching it at the grand opening of The Dance Space this weekend (December 5th) in Indianapolis (http://www.thedancespace.biz). Guyton Mundy will also be teaching it at Worlds in Nashville (http://www.ucwdcworlds.com).

You can check out the YouTube links of TajaliÕs dance at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncrLnVAz0QY and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ns9IQ-eRgG4.

WINTER CLASSES

The schedule for January-mid March is below.  Some classes will not be starting until mid January as I will be in Nashville for the UCWDC World ChampionshipsJ YesÉTaj and I are goingÉa very last minute decision due to some gentle and persuasive arm twisting by friends and nudges by people who thought we should bite the bullet and go. A husband who continually encourages and supports all these trips helps a lot tooJ IÕm looking forward to this event and more workshops and dancing from Jan. 2-9!

There are some changes to the winter schedule to take note of - there are some slight price increases due to rental increases and additions/deletions of some classes.

I will not be offering a beginner class at Varsity and instead those who took the fall beginner session will be in what is termed an ÒimproverÓ level. If youÕve line danced before, you should have no problem with this level; if youÕre brand new to line dance, there will be a class for brand new beginners in the fall. There are time changes to the classes at Varsity as well with improvers going from 5:30-6:30 followed by the intermediate class going from 6:30-7:30.

There is an extra class being added on at Mid-Sun on Wednesday mornings and in spring, there will be a new evening class added on for new beginners.

No Saturday classes are being offered during the winter session, however, they will resume in the spring. There will be a few workshops on Saturdays throughout the winter and details will follow.

Pre-registration is necessary for a number of classes and a registration form is below for your convenience as well. Please note the deadline date for winter registration is FRIDAY, JANUARY 8th.

UPCOMING EVENTS IN CALGARY

For those who donÕt have the opportunity to travel to events, we are lucky to be having two dance events in 2010.  I strongly encourage dancers to support these local events.  It gives you the opportunity to take from other instructors and it supports those who have brought the event to us.  We have so much fun at these events and IÕm so glad to see someone willing to bring them to Calgary.

The first event ÒFootloose in the FoothillsÓ (this was the winning name suggested by Carolyn Jurek of Calgary) takes place February 26-28 with guest instructor Joanne Brady.  Joanne is a wonderful woman who is blessed with a sense of humor and teaching ability that has everyone having fun and enjoying her classes.  There will be local instructors taking part as well and the weekend promises to be fun filled with two rooms going for workshops and social dancing during the evening.  YouÕll find the registration form here. (Please right-click the link and choose ÒSave link/target asÉ)

Stay tuned for more details but mark off Feb. 26-28th on your calendar and know that youÕre in for a fun weekend!

The second local event is the Calgary Dance Stampede which takes place April 16-18 at the downtown Hyatt Regency.  This event is a UCWDC event geared to both couples and line.  Guest line dance instructors include Guyton Mundy, Michele Perron & Knox Rhine.  For more details, please go to http://calgarydancestampede.com.
