For most people, the words "line dancing" conjure up a vision of people dancing in blue jeans, hands in pockets and wearing cowboy boots and hat. Sue Hall has worked hard to change that perception in Calgary. Sue is the owner of New Attitude Line Dance Company, which is the largest progressive contemporary line dance organization in Alberta. Focusing on a mixture of music including rock, rhythm & blues, jazz, disco, funk, soul, hip-hop, Latin American, celtic and more, line dancing has evolved to a new status that is becoming increasingly more popular.
Sue started line dancing about eleven years ago. After dancing for a couple of years with a local line dance group, she used her background as a previous fitness instructor to open her own dance business. Line dancing was changing and she wanted to be part of this new and exciting trend.
A normal semester sees Sue teaching anywhere from 12-15 classes or workshops a week with over 200 dancers. She and dancers from her classes have danced at numerous fundraisers, raising funds for charities including Servants Anonymous, Missing Children Society of Canada, Calgary Hospice, The Mustard Seed, Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, Inn From the Cold, and Towards A World Without Aids. New Attitude line dancers take part in events over Stampede, as well as dancing at a number of other events throughout the year. In 2008 Sue organized a line dance cruise to the Mexican Riviera with Michele Perron as a guest instructor. 72 dancers from Alberta, British Columbia, and various parts of the U.S. took part.
Knowing the importance of staying up to date with what is happening in the line dance world, Sue takes part in at least two world line dance events a year and takes classes herself for technique. In 2009 dancers from New Attitude will have attended or will be attending dance events in L.A., Portland, Las Vegas and New Jersey. She ensures that her dancers can go anywhere in the world and be able to jump into a line dance class and know many of the dances.
Sue is also the director of Teen Angels Calgary which is a non profit charitable organization she founded in 2007 to provide gifts for teens in need over the Christmas holidays. Sue currently lives in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with her husband, two kids, two cats, two frogs and family dog! In her spare time, she likes to explore second-hand book stores and consignment shops,Ķ.and of course, dance!
