LINE  DANCE CALGARY

MARCH 2008

ItÕs hard to believe that in five short weeks weÕll be boarding the Carnival Pride to cruise the Mexican Riviera.  I first met with Loraine of CruiseShip Centres back in June, 2007 to talk about this trip and itÕs been several months of planning and organizing.  The anticipation has been so much fun!  We have 71 confirmed line dancers, friends and family booked.  I canÕt think of anything nicer than being able to dance and vacation with people I enjoy being with and getting to meet some people from other places who will join us on this cruise.  Besides a large group from Alberta, there are dancers coming from British Columbia, Washington, New York and Tennessee.  It will be nice to make new line dance friends.  IÕm so positive that this is going to be such a fantastic cruise that IÕm already planning one for May/June 2010 doing the inside passage to AlaskaJ  Stay tuned for the next newsletter in May which will highlight our cruise experience and have new photos uploaded to the website.

January and February have been busy with winter classes which are just winding up as well as prepping dances for the cruise.  We have workshops and dance evenings planned for the cruise with over 110 dances for open dancing so getting us all prepped has been foremost in our minds.

Once we return from the cruise, it will be time to start prepping for Stampede, a trip to Colorado, California and Oregon and then Harvest Moon in the Okanagan in September.  Next year Gerard Murphy has an Eastern Caribbean cruise planned for April, 2009 that many of us from Calgary are hoping to do as well.  ItÕs nice to know there is always something to look forward to with our dancingJ

CLASSES FOR MAY/JUNE

IÕve had a number of requests from people about joining classes.  Please note that no new people will be able to register until September.  Most of the beginners in the class have been taking lessons since September and have moved up fairly quickly and itÕs more of a progressive beginner class now.  ItÕs very difficult for a brand new beginner to jump in and pick up the dances.

For those of you asking whether you should stay in beginner or move up and those asking about moving up from intermediate to advancedÉÉÉ.much depends on you.  I am more comfortable with people staying at their current levels until fall but at the same time, I welcome anyone to try different levels and see how they do.  My only stipulation is that no one can jump into an advanced level class unless theyÕve done dancing with me before.  Beginners, if you want to try an intermediate class before making a decision, youÕre welcome to give it a go.

STAMPEDE DEMO TEAM

Rope Square performance and caravan breakfast dates are being marked on the calendar as I write this.  Last year we had 45 enthusiastic dancers!  How many will we have this year?  Rope Square demos have already been set for Saturday, July 5th and Monday, July 7th.  Times still need to be confirmed.  As well, weÕll be dancing at several Caravan breakfasts around the city. ItÕs good for Calgary to see that line dancing is definitely not just country!

Some simple rules will apply for Stampede practices:  Demo team is only open to those in SueÕs current classes.  No outside dancers are able to join.  Once practice dates are set, they are only open to those committed to dancing at Rope Square. Anyone who wants to dance at Rope Square must attend at least three of the practices and have time to practice the dances that weÕll be performing at Rope Square. Practices will focus on the Rope Square demos as well as other dances that we tend to do over Stampede.

SUMMER CLASSES/EARLY FALL
Classes will be held in August for those going to Kelowna for Harvest and who want to prep for that dance event.  Anyone who is not going is still welcome to attend these classes.  They will be geared to intermediate+ dancers.  There will be one class at Varsity on Monday evenings, one class at Acadia on Wednesday evenings and possibly a Saturday morning class.  Dates still need to be finalized but tentative dates are Mondays August 11, 18 and 25th, Wednesdays August 13, 20th, 27th and Saturdays August 10, 17, 24 and 31st.  Once I have dates, locations and fees finalized, IÕll let everyone know.  These classes will be geared to teaching and reviewing dances on the Harvest Moon playlist and two new dances will be taught each class with reviews of other dances we do on a regular basis to ensure that everyone is up to speed for dances on the Harvest Moon playlist.

FALL CLASSES

Labour Day falls on September 1st this year and Harvest Moon is September 19, 20 and 21st.  I am still deciding whether to start classes before Harvest Moon and will post the fall schedule by the end of May.

In the meantime, below is the schedule of classes that take us to the end of June.  Please note all the registration deadlines.  If you have missed the deadline, please contact me to see if there is still space available.
